In Biblical times, what we now call "corn" (maize) was unknown in the ancient Near East, as it originated in the New World and only reached the Old World centuries later. When older English translations like the King James Version refer to "corn" more than 100 times, the term actually means grain in general—primarily wheat, barley, and occasionally other cereals such as spelt, millet, or fitches. The Hebrew word dagan, commonly translated as "corn," encompassed these staple cereal crops that formed the backbone of diets, economies, and daily life in ancient Israel, Egypt, and surrounding regions.
